10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Studying Abroad

Deciding to study abroad can definitely be nerve-racking and scary, but being prepared and learning as much as possible before arrival can be a great relief. As you adjust to a different time zone and being far from home, it is totally normal to face some challenges along the way. Below, you will find ten important things to know in case you decide to study abroad in Florence as a college student.

1. Slow Down

In Florence and Europe in general, people live a much slower life. A shock to us was how much slower people walk. I have often found myself annoyed walking behind slow walkers, but with time I learned to slow down myself and enjoy my surroundings. Dinner is also much later in Europe, while in America, we usually eat later. Most restaurants do not open until 7:00 pm, and even then, you might find that you are the only one eating so early.

2. Enjoy Your Home Base

When you first get there, you’ll think you must see it all in Europe. However, traveling every weekend gets tiring after a while, and it’s not cheap either. Many of our best memories were made when we explored little corners of Florence just like the locals do. There is so much to do in Florence! Our favorite spots are Piazzale Michelangelo, View On Art, and Piazza della Repubblica.

3. The Culture Shock Is Real

When being thrown into a new city, there are definitely many new adjustments you will have to make. Some culture shocks I experienced were going to the grocery store for the first time and going to restaurants. Going to the grocery store proved to be difficult, since I could not understand any labels, nor did I understand how to package fruits and vegetables. This definitely took time to learn, but now it’s like second nature.

4. Meals Should Be Leisurely

One of the first things we noticed once we got here was how it seemed so impossible to get the check. In America, we are so used to eating and immediately getting the check and leaving, almost like they are pushing us out. In Florence and Europe as a whole, things could not be further. At most places, individuals order appetizers and either primi or secondi piati, and then dessert. Dinner is an experience where you can connect with the individuals you are sitting across the table from. Waiters understand this and do not bring the bill until asked. They could leave you at the table for hours, and most European dinners do last 2 hours or longer. It is also harder to split the bill between friends compared to in America.

5. Most People Also Speak English

It seems like it will be totally confusing moving to a country where you do not speak the language and you aren’t sure if they speak your language. In our experience, in every single country we have been to, individuals spoke and understood English. Especially in Florence, most individuals are fluent and do not mind. It is also useful to pick up some Italian words and phrases to begin practicing with once you arrive. Locals will appreciate the gesture.

6. Homesickness Strikes at Random

Although homesickness may strike you at the start, sometimes it can appear suddenly, even when you’re having the time of your life! Maintaining communication with your loved ones will help, but so will establishing your own daily routine and social network in Florence. Personally, I felt homesick after the first month, and especially when we were not traveling and simply just home. Keeping busy with friends and being active can help! This feeling is not permanent.

7. Your Money Will Be Spent Faster Than You Expect

With weekend excursions, dining out, shopping, and other costs piling up, it’s very easy to exceed your budget. Making a budget is so important before and while you are in Florence. Traveling was our highest cost while abroad, but in our opinion, it was worth seeing such amazing and unique countries and cities. Choose what you want to spend your money on and enjoy it.

8. You Will Walk Everywhere

In Florence, we walk everywhere. The grocery store, school, Zara, the train station. Unlike other major cities, there is no metro to rely on, but walking also allows you to really interact with your city. It is very important to bring a pair of comfortable shoes so you can enjoy your time outside.

9. Be Aware

Florence is relatively safe in general, but petty crimes such as pickpocketing may occur. It is essential to stay vigilant and keep one’s belongings safe at all times.

10. Time Flies by Quicker than You Expect

While four months seems like a long time, it goes by quickly. You may experience a period of adjustment at first; however, soon enough, you will be leaving and saying goodbye to this amazing city. Take pictures, enjoy experiences, and be mindful.

Studying abroad in Florence is a life-changing experience, and we would not trade it for the world. This opportunity teaches one important lesson, such as independence, adaptability, and pushes you outside of your comfort zone.  Although it may have some difficulties, those will be insignificant compared to the valuable experiences you’ll gain! If you are about to come abroad… get excited! These are going to be the best four months of your life.
