Studying abroad in Florence is already an unforgettable experience—but one of the best parts? How easy it is to explore the rest of Europe. As two East Coast girls living in Florence for the summer, we made it our mission to take full advantage of every weekend. Florence quickly became our home base, and from there, we took trips that turned into some of our favorite memories. Here’s a look at a few destinations that made our time abroad even more special, along with the food, sights, and adventures that came with them.
1. Malta, Malta

If you’re studying in Florence and craving a beach escape, Malta is a must. This island is perfect for mixing relaxation with a little adventure. We booked a private boat tour, explored glowing sea caves, and even went cliff jumping into the Blue Lagoon.
Snorkeling in crystal-clear water felt surreal, but the food was just as memorable. Naar’s lobster ravioli is a must-try—rich, flavorful, and totally worth the hype. Malta is the kind of trip that reminds you how lucky you are to be abroad.
2. Cinque Terre, Italy

Just a 2.5-hour train ride from Florence, Cinque Terre is the ideal coastal getaway. We took a private boat ride along the cliffs, swam in turquoise waters, and relaxed on deck soaking up the views.
Wandering through Riomaggiore’s colorful village streets and watching the sunset from the rocks was the perfect way to end the day. For dinner, try the branzino at Il Casello—light, lemony, and super fresh. This spot is full of charm and effortless beauty.
3. Venice, Italy

Venice feels like a dream. We floated through the canals on a gondola, wandered through the Doge’s Palace, and got lost inside ornate palazzos filled with Renaissance art.
The view from the Grand Canal, especially with Santa Maria della Salute in the background, is stunning. For food, I had lobster pasta at La Piazza and enjoyed aperitivo by the water. Venice is magical and unlike anywhere else I’ve been.
4. Paris, France

Paris had everything I imagined: culture, style, and incredible food. We started with a boat tour along the Seine for perfect Eiffel Tower views, then explored the city’s winding streets.
From Nutella crepes at Au Clairon des Chasseurs to roast chicken and mussels at Les Amours, every meal felt special. Don’t skip the crookie (croissant-cookie hybrid) at Maison Bergeron—it’s worth the hype. Shopping, strolling, and soaking in the vibe made Paris unforgettable.
5. Rome, Italy

Rome was history and energy all at once. We toured the Vatican Museum, Colosseum, and Pantheon—and even saw Pope Leo XIV! Although it was super crowded and hot, the day turned around once we made our way to Paolina Roma and created matching charm bracelets with our roommates.
Later, we cooled off (literally) at Ice Club Roma, which was such a fun way to beat the heat. For dinner, Osteria da Fortunata served up one of the best Cacio e pepe dishes I’ve ever had. Rome was the perfect mix of ancient sights and modern memories.
What I’ll Take With Me
Living in Florence opened the door to so many other places I never thought I’d see. At the same time, the courses we took while abroad gave us the chance to truly immerse ourselves in Italian culture—whether it was learning about local family businesses, food traditions, or the way social media shapes everyday life here.
From boat rides to charm bracelets, every weekend brought something different. If you’re abroad, don’t limit yourself. Take the trips, try the food, engage with the culture, and let every place leave its mark.
