Experiencing Florence & Tips for Future Study Abroad Students

By Elizabeth Lee and Delaney Benjamin

Background

The two of us came here as complete strangers. One entering this experience alone, not knowing anyone, and the other with her three closest friends. Little did we know how much could happen in four months and how impactful this experience would be. If you are thinking about studying abroad, take this as your sign to do it. It has changed our lives for the better, and we are leaving this experience having learned so much about ourselves and the world. From personal growth to exploring new cultures to building diverse networks, there is something to learn every day. Every moment is a new lesson, and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is part of the unforgettable journey. Beyond academics, it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in new cultures, travel to exciting places, and create unforgettable life experiences that shape your identity and how you view the world. From all the lessons we’ve learned while in Florence, here are the ones that stuck with us most.

1. Take Risks

Stepping out of your comfort zone is where you learn the most. Whether it’s trying a new food, exploring a new city, or doing an activity that scares you, taking risks opens doors to unexpected growth and unforgettable experiences.

2. Embrace the Culture

Don’t just observe, immerse yourself. Learn the language, participate in local traditions, and truly connect with the culture around you. Embracing the way others live can expand your perspective and deepen your appreciation for the world’s diversity.

3. Learn to Be Comfortable with the Uncomfortable

Growth begins where comfort ends. Don’t be afraid of a challenge; they will test you, but it’ll also teach you resilience, flexibility, and confidence in your own abilities.

4. Meet As Many People as You Can

Everyone you meet has a shared desire to be here. Be open, curious, and friendly, you never know which conversations will lead to lasting friendships or new opportunities. It can be scary, but it just takes saying hi!

5. Say Yes, But It’s Also Okay to Say No

Say yes to adventure, new experiences, and spontaneity, but don’t forget to listen to yourself. It’s okay to set boundaries and take time for yourself when needed. Balance is key, you don’t want to burn yourself out!

6. Trust That Everything Will Work Out

Things won’t always go as planned, and that’s okay. Trust the process, stay flexible, and know that challenges often lead to more growth. Things always have a way of working themselves out.

7. Be Present & Enjoy Every Moment

Time will fly. Slow down, listen to your surroundings, and really soak in every second. You are making memories that’ll last a lifetime.

8. Trust Yourself, You Can Do Hard Things

You’re capable of more than you know. When things feel tough or overwhelming, remind yourself of your strength. You’ve made it this far, don’t stop now!

Stepping outside of your comfort zone is where you will grow the most. Going abroad was out of both of our comfort zones, yet pushing ourselves to go was the best decision. We have a newfound love for traveling and experiencing the unknown. There are truly no words to describe how incredible this experience was, so if you are thinking of studying abroad, take this as your sign. You won’t regret it.
