Finding Home In Florence: Our Unforgettable Study Abroad Experience

Studying abroad in Florence, Italy was more than an academic journey for us. It became a life changing chapter filled with discovery, growth, challenge and so many memories that still feel like a dream. What started as a semester away from home quickly transformed into an experience that shaped each of us in unique, meaningful ways.

Arriving in Florence: When Everything Felt New

We will never forget the moment we stepped out into the beautiful city of Florence, jet lagged but excited for what was to come. The city felt alive and full of history, warmth and charm that we’d only seen through a screen. From navigating narrow alleyways to learning how to order our first Italian cappuccino correctly (never after 11 a.m.), those days were filled with small wins and new routines that would become our daily life. Each adjustment made the city feel a little more like home.

Studying in the Heart of the Renaissance

Walking to class in Florence felt nothing like school back home. Our classrooms were historic buildings, our study breaks included views of the Duomo and glasses of prosecco. Even our lessons extended into museums, piazzas, and art filled streets, fully encapsulating the Florence experience.

Florence teaches you by immersing you, not just through textbooks. We weren’t just learning about the Renaissance; we were standing in front of masterpieces that defined it. Whether studying art, culture, language, or architecture, every subject felt more alive in a city where history isn’t just preserved, it’s celebrated daily.

Immersing Ourselves in Italian Culture

Italy taught us to live slower, appreciate more, and savor everything. Especially the food!

Learning the Language

While none of us became fluent overnight, trying Italian, even imperfectly, opened doors to conversations, friendships, and moments we would’ve missed otherwise.

Food That Felt Like Art

From fresh pasta to Florentine steak, Italian cuisine wasn’t just delicious, it became  a part of our daily rhythm.

Some of our favorite food memories include:

  • Sharing pizza that somehow tasted better simply because we were in Italy
  • Enjoying aperitivo with classmates as the city buzzed with people
  • People watching at our favorite cafes
  • Cooking classes with unlimited wine and friends

Weekend Adventures Across Europe

Whilst our time in Florence was enjoyable, we also took to the rest of Europe and beyond on the weekends. From France to Spain to Croatia and others, we explored all the cultures that we could and embraced it to the fullest. Some of our most notable moments came from the simple things. Whether that be food from the Christmas markets in Copenhagen or meeting your parents in Greece. We found joy in the experiences we created.

Challenges We Faced

Studying abroad isn’t just beautiful views and delicious pasta, there were challenges too.

Homesickness Happens

Being far from home taught us independence, but it also reminded us how important support systems are, both the old ones and the new ones we have built together abroad.

Cultural Adjustments

Whether it was unfamiliar store hours, navigating transportation, or adapting to the Italian communication styles, the learning curve was real. But every challenge taught us patience, confidence, and adaptability skills we will carry long after Florence.

How This Experience Changed Us

Living in Florence changed each of us differently, but one thing remained true: we all are going to return home with a deeper sense of self and a broader understanding of the world.

Florence gave us:

  • Confidence to navigate unfamiliar spaces
  • Appreciation for cultures beyond our own
  • Lifelong friendships and shared stories
  • A new lens through which we see art, food, and daily life

Final Thoughts: Why You Should Study Abroad

If you’re considering studying abroad, let our experience be your sign to go. Florence has taught us more than we ever expected, academically, culturally, and personally. Whether you dream of art museums, charming streets, meaningful friendships, or simply stepping outside of your comfort zone, you’ll find all of that and more in Italy.
