Studying abroad wasn’t just about academics – it was about growing and stepping into the unknown. It was the first time I truly left my comfort zone, and looking back, it was by far one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself.
Arriving in Florence felt like landing on another planet – in the most beautiful way. Everything was unfamiliar; the streets, the language, the pace of life. I had to learn to navigate, how to order food without panicking, and how to handle homesickness in a place where I didn’t yet feel at home. But here’s the thing: every challenge became a lesson. I grew more adaptable, more open-minded, and more confident. I stopped being afraid of the unknown, and instead I started leaning into it. Florence taught me that growth doesn’t happen where you’re comfortable – it happens when you let go of needing to have it all figured out.

Florence isn’t a city you just see – it’s one you feel. The art, architecture, the narrow streets that seem to hum with historical energy. History is alive here. Standing in front of the Duomo or watching the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo reminded me that we are part of a much bigger story – and that’s both humbling and inspiring.

Travelling through Italy and surrounding countries in Europe changed how I see the world. Visiting Rome, Venice, Cinque Terre, Palermo, and other small Italian towns in between – and each place had its own rhythm, its own magic. But it wasn’t just the big sights that stuck with me. It was the quiet moments: getting to hang my laundry to dry outside on my balcony, watching street musicians in the evening, seeing locals chatting outside cafes. Florence taught me to slow down, to look up, and to find beauty in everything. When I head home, I will be sure to notice more and appreciate more. I want to carry this mindset with me.

Living abroad, over 4,000 miles from home where everything is familiar, was hard. There were days I felt overwhelmed, and I questioned my ability to overcome those tough times. But every time I faced something new and handled it – whether it was navigating a train strike or having a tough day struggling to use my Italian – I proved something to myself. I learned that I am resilient. I can adapt. I can trust myself to figure things out. Now that is a lesson I’ll carry for life.
Florence gave me so much more than academic credits. It gave me confidence. Perspective. New friends. New favorites. A deeper understanding of the word – and of myself.

If you ever get the chance to study abroad – especially in a city like Florence – take it. It’s not just a trip. It’s a transformation.
