Why Study Abroad in Florence?

As the end of my study abroad program approaches, I figured it was only right to recommend the city I never want to leave. Florence, Italy is one of the most iconic and inspiring places to study abroad. Whether you’re an art major, a business student, or just someone craving a change of pace, Florence offers an unforgettable experience that goes far beyond the classroom.

1. A City That Feels Like a Museum

Florence is often described as a living museum—and it truly is. This small city was the birthplace of the Renaissance and home to legendary figures like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Dante Alighieri. As a student, you’ll walk past the Duomo on your way to class, see Michelangelo’s David in person, and maybe even do some homework in the Boboli Gardens. Which at the time, seemed like no big deal, but is something that should be appreciated and not taken for granted. Studying in Florence means you’re constantly surrounded by beauty, culture, and inspiration.

2. The Perfect Size for Students

Unlike big cities like Rome or Milan, Florence is walkable and very student friendly. It’s easy to get around, and everything you need—from cafes and markets to museums and nightlife—is within a 15-minute walk. This makes it super easy to explore, meet up with friends, and really immerse yourself in the city. Additionally, Florence has a strong international student presence, with over 36,000 study abroad students annually, about half of which are from the USA. I personally thought it was similar to living in a college town just with cultural differences. No matter where you are in the city, you will always find other students around and provides the perfect opportunity to meet new people.

3. Real Italian Life (With a Touch of Comfort)

Florence strikes a perfect balance between authentic Italian culture and the comfort of having resources geared toward American students. You’ll get to learn the language (even if it’s just ordering your daily cappuccino), adapt to a slower-paced lifestyle, and try some of the best food you’ll ever eat—think fresh pasta, Tuscan bread, and world-class gelato. Living in Italy might help you change your perception on energy use as their grid is not as strong as one in the USA so having a microwave, dishwasher or clothing dryer is considered a luxury here. Once learning to live without these appliances, it helps you realize that you do not need to use them as often even when you get back home because living in Florence fosters a lifestyle that helps you reduce your energy consumption.

4. Expand Your Perspective

Living in Florence forces you to step outside your comfort zone. You’ll learn how to navigate a foreign country, communicate across cultures, and adapt to a new way of life. These experiences don’t just make for great Instagram photos—they help you grow personally and professionally. Employers value students who study abroad for their independence, global perspective, and problem-solving skills.

5. Travel Opportunities Galore

Florence is the ideal base for weekend travel. You’re just a short train ride away from Rome, Venice, the Amalfi Coast, and even other countries like France, Switzerland, and Croatia. Whether you’re exploring nearby Tuscan towns or hopping on a budget flight to Barcelona, your weekends can turn into mini adventures that create memories to last a lifetime. Although Florence has a small airport, you might find it easier to book a train and a flight out of one of the many near-by cities in order to find the cheapest flights to your dream destination. Final Thoughts

Studying abroad in Florence isn’t just about academics—it’s about discovering who you are in a completely new environment. You’ll come back with new friends, fresh perspectives, millions of memories, and probably a serious appreciation for Italian coffee. So, if you’re looking for a study abroad destination that’s rich in culture, easy to navigate, and full of unforgettable moments, Florence should be at the top of your list.

Florence changes you—and that’s exactly the point.
